Cost per pallet position: what Australian sources publish

Most Australian racking prices are quoted per pallet position. Here is what that means, what the public numbers say, and why two quotes with the same per-position price can be very different.

What is a pallet position?

A pallet position is one storage slot for one pallet. A bay with three pallets across and four beam levels holds 12 positions if the bottom level is used for pallets. Always ask suppliers whether they count the floor level and what pallet size and weight the position is rated for.

Why the installed prices disagree. Two public guides give very different "installed" prices for standard selective racking: one (December 2024 data) says A$80–A$200 per position for supply, install and basic engineering certification (Pallet Racking & More); another (2026, QLD/NSW metro) says A$280–A$520 per position for a fully engineered, certified install (Pallet Racking Maintenance). Public kit listings and supplier guides put kit or supply-only prices at A$50–A$250 per position.

The older "installed" range overlaps the supply-only ranges. Our reading, which we cannot confirm, is that cheaper quotes often cover little more than kit plus basic labour, while the higher range prices in site survey, engineered design, anchoring, signage and AS 4084 sign-off. Each of those installed figures comes from a single source, so treat both as unconfirmed and ask every supplier to itemise what is included.

Why per-position prices mislead

  1. Scope. Supply only, supply and install, and engineered and certified are different products at different prices.
  2. Size effects. Small jobs carry fixed costs (travel, setup, engineering), so the per-position price is higher for 20 positions than for 2,000.
  3. Specification. Height, beam capacity and upright rating change the price. One source splits its Dec 2024 range by duty: light A$80–A$120, medium A$120–A$150, heavy A$150–A$200 per position (Pallet Racking & More).
  4. Add-ons. Engineering, anchoring and certification are said to add A$35–A$75 per position (Pallet Racking Maintenance); floor works, guards and signage are extra again.

Bay or position?

Some suppliers price per bay instead. Convert before comparing: positions = pallets per level × levels. Cantilever racking is priced per bay or per arm rather than per position (see Racking types compared).

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost per pallet position for racking?
There is no single average. Public guides give A$50–A$250 per position for supply-only selective racking and A$80–A$200 to A$280–A$520 per position installed, depending on specification. Prices vary, get quotes.
Is the per-position price the same as the price per bay?
No. A bay holds several positions. Multiply positions per level by the number of levels you will actually use, then divide the bay price by that number to compare.
Does the per-position price include installation?
Only if the quote says so. Kit and package prices usually do not include installation, freight, engineering or certification.
