Used vs new pallet racking: what you save and what to check
Used racking can save real money, but only when it is undamaged, compatible and correctly rated for your loads. Here is what Australian suppliers publish.

How much cheaper is used racking?
| Item | Published range (A$) | Evidence | Public sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used racking saving versus new Depends on stock, matching brand, size and condition. | 30–50% percent cheaper | 4 sources | QLD Storage Systems, Workspace Systems, Dynamic Racking, Gwelo Developments source notes: used racking saving versus new |
The sources disagree on the top end: one says up to 60% (Gwelo Developments), another "up to 40%" (Dynamic Racking). Note that these are suppliers selling used stock, so read them as marketing claims, not market statistics. Example from one Victorian listing: used Dexion 2.4 m end frames from A$100 plus GST and beams from A$33 each (Workspace Systems). Another example: a used APC-type drive-in system, 9 lanes by 6 deep (120 pallet capacity), listed at A$135 including GST per pallet space, with delivery and installation extra (Display and Rack Australia). That is a single listing, not an average, and compare it with new drive-in at A$150–A$300 (supply, scope not stated).
When used makes sense
- Standard selective racking in a common brand and size, in good condition.
- You can inspect it, or have it inspected, before you buy.
- You can get matching beams, frames and spares later.
When it can be a false economy
- Damage and repairs. Bent uprights or beams, missing clips and repainted components can hide reduced capacity. Public guidance says damaged racking should be assessed by a competent person (WorkSafe Victoria, SafeWork NSW).
- Mixed brands. Beams and frames from different systems are not necessarily compatible. Ask the supplier to confirm the system, capacity and drawings.
- Load signs and certification. Safe working load signs must match the configuration. Ask who will certify the installed layout.
- Installation still costs. The saving applies to materials. Labour, engineering and inspection are largely the same.
Used racking checklist
- Brand, model, and beam and frame capacities in writing.
- Photos or an inspection of every upright and beam.
- Who supplies drawings and load signs.
- Delivery, installation and certification costs.
- Return or warranty terms.
