Push-back racking cost in Australia
Push-back racking stores pallets on inclined carts or rails that roll back as new pallets are loaded, giving deeper storage than selective with less forklift entry into the rack than drive-in.
The short answer. We found two public push-back ranges: A$250–A$400 per pallet position (December 2024, supply and install, basic spec) and A$520–A$880 per position (2026, QLD/NSW metro, fully engineered and certified). Each comes from a single source and we found no supply-only push-back price in a public listing, so treat both as unconfirmed.
Published ranges per pallet position
| Item | Published range (A$) | Evidence | Public sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Push-back racking, supply and install (basic spec) Dec 2024 market data. | A$250–A$400 per pallet position | 1 source, unconfirmed | Pallet Racking & More source notes: push-back racking, supply and install (basic spec) |
| Push-back racking, supply and install (fully engineered and certified) 2026, QLD/NSW metro. | A$520–A$880 per pallet position | 1 source, unconfirmed | Pallet Racking Maintenance source notes: push-back racking, supply and install (fully engineered and certified) |
The 2026 installer guide gives a typical push-back project size of 100 to 500 positions and says cold-store installs sit about 15% to 25% higher (Pallet Racking Maintenance). The December 2024 range is from Pallet Racking & More.
A worked range
Our arithmetic for a 100-position push-back system: basic spec A$25,000–A$40,000; fully engineered A$52,000–A$88,000. For 300 positions: A$75,000–A$120,000 and A$156,000–A$264,000. Illustrations of two single-source ranges, not quotes.
How it compares with other types
- Selective, same 2026 guide: A$280–A$520 per position. Drive-in: A$360–A$680. Push-back: A$520–A$880 (Pallet Racking Maintenance).
- Push-back is the most expensive of the three per position on that guide. Our reading, not a sourced finding: its attraction is access to each lane's front pallet without driving a forklift into the rack, which public sources do not let us price.
Figures we did not use
Gold Coast Racking gives an "average total cost" range of A$200–A$600 for push-back without saying whether it is per position, per bay or per project, so we have not used it.
Safety and standards
WorkSafe Victoria, SafeWork NSW and SafeWork SA say their racking guidance is for standard selective racking and that additional safety measures may be needed for push-back, drive-in, cantilever and other specialised types (WorkSafe Victoria, SafeWork NSW, SafeWork SA). Ask any push-back supplier which design standard applies, who engineers and signs it off, what the cart or rail load rating is, and how it should be inspected. This is not engineering or legal advice.
Why the installed prices disagree. Two public guides give very different "installed" prices for standard selective racking: one (December 2024 data) says A$80–A$200 per position for supply, install and basic engineering certification (Pallet Racking & More); another (2026, QLD/NSW metro) says A$280–A$520 per position for a fully engineered, certified install (Pallet Racking Maintenance). Public kit listings and supplier guides put kit or supply-only prices at A$50–A$250 per position.
The older "installed" range overlaps the supply-only ranges. Our reading, which we cannot confirm, is that cheaper quotes often cover little more than kit plus basic labour, while the higher range prices in site survey, engineered design, anchoring, signage and AS 4084 sign-off. Each of those installed figures comes from a single source, so treat both as unconfirmed and ask every supplier to itemise what is included.
The same applies to push-back: the two public ranges differ by about a factor of two and each is a single source.
